Mediate UK Releases Back-to-School Report as New School Rules Take Effect
The 16-page report covers the new three-item branded uniform limit from 1 September 2026 and attendance fines issued per parent, per child.
September arguments are usually July's unanswered questions arriving all at once, and they are almost all predictable a month in advance.”
BRACKNELL, BERKSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM, August 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Mediate UK has published a free back to school report for separated parents in England and Wales, ahead of the September term. The Back-to-School Co-Parenting Report 2026 runs to 16 pages, is free to download, and covers the ten most common back to school disputes, a three-stage planning checklist and the school rules that change this term.— Jess Knauf, Director of Client Strategy, Mediate UK
The report is based on 463 enquiries and mediation sessions handled by Mediate UK in August 2024 and August 2025 in which back to school issues were discussed. Term-time arrangements and handovers were the most common source of disagreement, raised in 41% of those cases, ahead of pick-ups, drop-offs and travel logistics at 25%, and uniform, PE kit and equipment costs at 23%.
Two school rule changes affect separated parents this term:
From 1 September 2026, state-funded schools in England can require no more than three compulsory branded items of uniform and PE kit, or four at secondary level where one of them is a tie. The limit was introduced by the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026. The report asks parents to check the school's published uniform policy before either household buys anything, because items that were compulsory last year may now be optional.
Attendance penalty notices in England are issued per parent, per child. A term-time absence arranged by one parent can result in a penalty notice for both parents with parental responsibility, whether or not the second parent agreed to the trip. A first notice is £80 if paid within 21 days and £160 after that, for each parent and each child.
What the report recommends:
Planning works better six weeks before term than in the final week of August. The report sets out a three-stage sequence for parents starting later: term dates, uniform and club decisions first, then purchases, childcare and transport, then routines and first-day logistics.

- State-funded schools in England are limited to three compulsory branded items from 1 September 2026, or four at secondary level if one is a tie.

Jess Knauf, Director of Client Strategy at Mediate UK, said: "September arguments are usually July's unanswered questions arriving all at once. The families who get through the first fortnight calmly are rarely the ones who get on best. They are the ones who wrote things down in the summer and agreed a date to look at it again."
Parents who cannot agree school arrangements can attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting,
known as a MIAM, before term starts. Most school disputes are settled in one or two joint sessions. Legal aid for family mediation is means tested only, and families can check whether they qualify for legal aid in a few minutes online. The report can be downloaded at mediateuk.co.uk.
