UK faces widespread snow, ice as cold weather persists

(MENAFN) The UK is preparing for additional snow and ice as the ongoing cold spell continues, with nearly the entire country under yellow weather warnings.

Ice warnings, which came into effect Tuesday evening, will remain in place until Wednesday morning across much of England, Wales, and parts of Scotland. Meanwhile, northern Scotland continues to face a combined snow and ice warning.

Authorities have warned that icy conditions could cause injuries from slips and falls, while some roads may become hazardous. In the north of Scotland, travel disruptions on trains and planes are possible, along with potential power outages.

The severe weather has already led to the closure of over 1,000 schools, and train services have been disrupted. Temperatures are forecast to drop further on Wednesday in Scotland and Northern Ireland compared to Tuesday.

As of Tuesday evening, official warnings cover nearly all of the UK. A yellow warning for ice (19:31 Tuesday – 10:00 Wednesday) affects parts of Scotland and most of England and Wales. Northern Ireland is also under a yellow ice warning (18:00 Tuesday – 11:00 Wednesday). Northern Scotland has a yellow warning for snow and ice (midnight Tuesday – 23:59 Wednesday), replacing a previous, broader warning.

The wintry conditions are driven by Storm Goretti, named the first storm of the year by French forecasters. The storm is expected to pass through or near the English Channel, primarily impacting England and Wales.

Forecasters predict that Wales and the Midlands could receive 5 to 10 cm of snow. Storm Goretti may undergo “explosive cyclogenesis” on Thursday, sometimes called a “weather bomb,” which occurs when the storm’s central pressure drops by 1 millibar per hour over 24 hours and can produce strong winds.
